The carrying of a cross-like torch to light the route dates back to the first Comus parade in 1857. Although electricity has lessened the need for the Flambeaux, because of the effect of the hand-carried torches a few krewes or groups in the Mardi Gras (Babylon, Momus, Proteus and Comus) still use the Flambeaux.
